Urgent Civil Society Statement on the Current State of Play at G8 Summit

Despite the great expectations placed on the Japanese leadership with regards to global issues centering around the environment and development, we see little sign of progress towards a successful conclusion of the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit in just over 70 days. The lack of ambitious policy proposals from the Japanese Presidency is the cause of our great concern that the leaders gathering at Toyako may end up not producing any positive outcomes.

Taking the opportunity of the Civil G8 Dialogue where the G8 Sherpas directly engage in a dialogue with the global civil society, the 2008 G8 Summit NGO Forum issues this urgent call on the Government of Japan to boost its efforts to avoid failure.

Hope of Tanzaku Action

The Hokkaido Toyako G8 Summit meeting starting on 7 July 2008 is a golden opportunity for the Government of Japan to exercise its responsibilities for the world along with the other G8 countries.. We hope that the Government of Japan and the other G8 countries do not only seek their best interests but also make a strong commitment to tackling global issues and announce concrete actions for building a sustainable and peaceful world.

Today, we face a growing number of diverse global issues. The average temperature of the globe has risen by 0.74℃ during the last 100 years. The earth is losing its biodiversity 100 times faster than in the past. The amount of waste produced on earth is estimated to double in the next 50 years.

While the planet faces such an environmental stress, one billion people live in extreme poverty. 15 million lose their lives because they have no access to health services. More than 72 million children do not receive a primary education.

There are 12 million refugees around the world due to military conflicts andmore than 24 million people are internally displaced. Policing, surveillance and exclusion of people practicing particular kinds of religion and belonging to certain ethnic groups or race are spreading throughout the world.
Our hope is to change these gloomy pictures of the world. We can change the world. Please join us and take part in the Toyako Tanzaku Action as your own step towards changing the world.

About Tanzaku Action - One Million Wishes

Tanabata is the Japanese tradition of making a wish on a star on "Tanabata Day" on July 7th (in some parts of Japan such as Hokkaido it is on August 7th). Let's send our message to the G8 leaders by writing our hopes on a "virtual Tanzaku" (Tanzaku is a slip of paper on which we write our hopes and hang it on a bamboo tree) to make them take the necessary actions to change the world for better.

●What will happen to the collected Tanzakus and messages?

We will count the number of participants and send the messages to the G8 leaders through the Japanese prime minister.

●How to participate

Support our positions by reading the "hope of Toyako Tanzaku Action" and the "letter to the Prime Minister".
1. Click the check box of "take part in Toyako Tanzaku Action!"
2. Write your name
3. Write your thoughts and hopes about what kind of world you want our world to be, your hopes about the environment, poverty, human rights, peace, and your message to the leaders.
（you can simply send your name without writing a message.）
4. add the additional information and click "send"
5. make sure everything is correct in the confirmation page
6. Thank you. We will post updates about this action on our website.
Take part in this action

●Deadline

Please take action as soon as possible. There are three deadlines and the sooner you send your message, the more likely that your message will be sent.

First deadline May 15th
Second deadline June 7th (one month before the summit)
Final deadline June 30th (7 days before the summit)
